What is uterine adenomyosis?

This is a condition which causes heavy and painful periods. The uterus gets larger than normal and it often occurs along with endometriosis. It may be present along with fibroids.

How is adenomyosis diagnosed?

Often it is diagnosed with an ultrasound or an MRI.

Treatment

How is adenomyosis treated?

The aim of treatment is to reduce heavy bleeding and pain.

These options include:

  • painkillers like NSAIDs
  • the levogestrel IUD (Mirena) which can be inserted in clinic
  • birth control pills
  • other medications to suppress your periods
  • surgery and hysterectomy in severe cases
