Endometriosis
What is endometriosis?
It is a condition that can cause pain in the lower abdomen and trouble getting pregnant. Endometrial cells which are usually present in the inner lining of the uterus are present outside the uterus in this condition. When this happens it causes inflammation and pain.
Symptoms
pain in their lower abdomen before or during the periods
pain in their lower abdomen most of the time
pain in lower abdomen during intercourse
pain in their lower abdomen during urination and bowel movements
difficulty in getting pregnant
the presence of endometriotic cysts in the ovaries
Treatment
How is endometriosis treated?
The treatment would depend on your symptoms and your plans for future pregnancy.
Treatment options would include:
- painkillers
- the birth control pill or the Mirena device
- medications which suppress your menstrual cycle
- laparoscopic removal of endometriotic cysts and tissue
- hysterectomy in severe cases
